ART
PS 34 ART Program
Students in grades Kindergarten through 5 participate in Art classes with our dedicated Art teacher Ms. Lawrence. Art lessons incorporate both technique and the exploration of a wide range of art materials. Each year, students create works of art in collage, painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media. Our lessons are based on the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Visual Arts benchmarks. Students are encouraged to experiment, wonder and make discoveries in art class. PS 34 students are challenged to think critically and deeply about the world around them through creating diverse works of art and through observing and analyzing works of art by a diverse range of artists.
PTA Funded ART Program
ECKFORD STREET ART STUDIO (PRE-K)
ESS Community Projects @ Eckford Street Studio provides art for our PreK and K classes. The program pairs a professional Teaching Artist with classroom teachers to infuse and enhance the classroom curriculum with art making. During these partnerships, students and teachers learn about historical and contemporary art and artists, explore new materials and processes, and practice analyzing and discussing artwork. Units are co-planned by PS34 and ESScp staff to engage and respond to students' interests while deepening their understanding of school subjects. Residencies culminate in an in-school art exhibition for parents and the school community to enjoy.
Eckford Street Studio was founded in 2013 by artist, educator, and PS34 parent Kristin Melkin, and received 501(c)(3) status in 2018 as ESS Community Projects. ESScp provides art experiences and instruction for all ages, from 6 months to adults, with the mission of bringing high quality art education to all members of our North Brooklyn community regardless of income or experience.
